Podcast: Urban and Regional Policy Fellow Steve Wertheim on European-US planning processes

A couple of weeks ago, I spoke with 2011 URP fellow Steve Wertheim (whose work has appeared on this blog here, here, and here) about some of the broader takeaways from his fellowship and their applicability to Steve’s work in the Central Corridor district of San Francisco. The Central Corridor, a formerly industrial neighborhood located next to the city’s central business district, is currently re-imagining itself in much the same way as other urban core industrial areas have in the dense, modernizing European cities of Torino, Amsterdam, Lyon, and Copenhagen that Steve visited last spring. We also discussed some of the ways in which the U.S. “bottom-up” planning paradigm could be leveraged to adapt some of the regional planning advantages utilized under the European model.
